Team work is important for the success of any company or organisation. It might be in a sales team, a football team, a school choir but whatever size a team is, team work creates the basis for which goals are achieved. As time goes we tend to forget that the team is the sum of individuals who must perform. The idea of a team winning by itself is a myth, a team wins because the individuals make the difference whilst working as a team.
1. Not everyone is equal
In any team there is always that team member that can do more. It might be a Ronaldo or Messi type of person but a person who can change the game. As much as it is good to emphasize the need for team work, you also need to emphasize the need for individual brilliance. Without the individual performance of Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls might never have become what they became even though Chicago Bulls had some of the best team work in the history of Basketball.
2. Making a Difference
Sometimes the strategy between organisations is equal such that two teams can cancel each other out, they can both be defensive, in the case of corporate companies they might both be very risk averse, or very traditional such that there is never any change on how the game or organisation progresses. An individual is then needed such as Steve Jobs who can make the difference. They can stick to the rules of the business but when allowed their brilliance can create new markets of new frontiers. Until we allow them to be brilliant we might stay the same team. This is seen too often in sports games, when everyone is settling for a draw, one team member does the extra ordinary and scores just as everyone had lost hope.
3. The team must accommodate individuals as well
In as much as the individual must play for the team, the team must encourage the individual to operate at their optimum. There are items when a team is not good enough for an individual because that team strangles the skills or capacity of the individual such that they are frustrated. An eagle needs to fly with other eagles to feel that its an eagle. The reason why the best players are sold to better teams is because where they might currently be in, is no longer good enough to accommodate their skills. Companies such as Google and Microsoft employ the best there is in the professional market because they can accommodate the very best.
4. Each Individual Makes up the team
The team is the sum of the individuals, and those individuals must perform for a team to exist. This means that each individual must be given enough attention so that they can perform just enough to cover their expected function or position. There is a minimum performance level that is expected for each team member in order for the team to become a team. The best teams are those that can maximize the performance of their team members. When a team gets the best of its team members then there is hope for that team.
5. The reward of the team is also individual effort
When a team does well, it is not just the team that is rewarded but there is a personal ego attached to each team member with a personal satisfaction of not only belonging to the team but also being part of the team through individual contribution. The team may win but the individuals also feel like personal winners as well. If individuals are not allowed to perform at their minimum best they might never truly feel that they were part of the achievements that the team would have managed.
