There is no better time than to create a business empire than in a dry season. This of course can seem like the opposite of what is expected. During the dry season there are many challenges with different problems requiring new solutions. It is during this time that it would seem ridiculous to even think of starting a new business venture.
1. No one else will
The first reason to invest and create a business venture in a drought season is that no one else will. By becoming the only person who does, you becoming the first mover. Most people will remember your business more than anyone else. This is the best time to perfect your branding. There might be a bit of competition but this is a time to take advantage of the reluctance of most people to invest in the drought time.
2. You can’t do worse
When everything else is a challenge when you have lost everything else or the economy is just bad then, really, you don’t have much to lose. You could invest and lose but you were going to lose anyway in the tough environment. It is best to try than not to try anything. You can’t do any worse and even if you do, there will always be the excuse that it was a tough environment.
3. You create the toughest business
The harder the ground the more energy that is needed. You will create more robust business systems, culture and be more observant. You are more aggressive in a drought economy than in an economy that seems easy. The longest running companies were created when times were more difficult. They did not have as much information or marketing ability that we have today. Most business that survived this long were based on real hard work and a level of faith in the idea that was there. Think of Coca cola, Johnson and Johnson, Dell computers, etc, are big companies today but they did not just start when things were easy.
4. You appreciate the height of Success
Starting from the bottom gives you an understanding of what it takes to rise to the top. You will then understand what culture you need in order to get to the top and stay at the top. It becomes a school of “how to be the best” and what you need to stay on top of the mountain. Most people who get to the top without the hardness of the ground do not understand what it means. Sometimes starting at the bottom teaches you appreciation of the height of Success.
5. You create a fear factor
People respect people that survive in the worst environment or that are victorious in the worst of seasons. We tend to create heroes of people that achieve great things against the odds. The same thing applies to business, a fear factor of goodwill is created when a company survives the worst of times. An air of invincibility is created about companies that stay focused when economies are bad. It builds confidence and trust in that the company understands what it is doing.
